        "content": "<p>Party threats<\/p>\n<p>From Koran Tempo<\/p>\n<p>The Central Java regional board of the United Development <br>\nParty (PPP) has threatened to dismiss members who fail to support <br>\nMegawati Soekarnoputri and Hasyim Muzadi in the presidential <br>\nrunoff (Tempo Interaktif, Aug. 23).<\/p>\n<p>Logically, if a party truly represented the people's <br>\naspirations, such a threat would be unnecessary because the <br>\nparty's stance would automatically be in accordance with the <br>\nwishes of the grassroots.<\/p>\n<p>What this threat indicates is that the regional board realizes <br>\nthe coalition it has formed does not have popular support, <br>\nleading to the fear of insubordination within the party's ranks.<\/p>\n<p>Tragically, most Indonesian people are still poor and <br>\nuneducated, making them easy targets of intimidation, enticement <br>\nand bribery.
