Party paraphernalia torn down<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The Surabaya Election Supervisory Committee
\n(Panwaslu) has torn down 148 flags and other political party
\nparaphernalia throughout the city.<\/p>\n
The cleanup was held at predawn Tuesday by Panwaslu officials,
\nassisted by local police, public order officers and members of
\npolitical parties.<\/p>\n
"We haven't covered all parts of the city. The cleanup was
\ncarried out only on the city's main streets, so we still have to
\nclean up other areas in the city," said Mahmud Suhermono, a
\nPanwaslu member.<\/p>\n
The only untoward incident during the cleanup occurred when a
\nsecurity post of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
\n(PDI-P) was about to be demolished by the officials.<\/p>\n
"After negotiating, the members of PDI-P finally agreed to
\ndemolish the post themselves within one or two days," he said.<\/p>\n
According to the Election Law, political parties are not
\nallowed to campaign prior to the official campaign period,
\nincluding unfurling banners or posters on the street. -- Antara<\/p>",
