Partnership needed for health promotion<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The fourth International Conference on Health
\nPromotion closed here yesterday, ending with a declaration on
\nhealth promotion strategy toward the next century.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Declaration later announced by Indonesian Minister
\nof Health Sujudi stressed the need for more partnerships with
\nuniversities, the private sector and entertainment industries to
\nincrease health promotion.<\/p>\n
The five-day conference was sponsored by the World Health
\nOrganization, Indonesia's Ministry of Health and international
\nand non-governmental organizations. It brought together 500
\nparticipants from 73 countries.<\/p>\n
Indonesia was chosen as host because of its successes in
\nvarious health promotion programs. Sujudi said he hoped they
\nwould serve as models for other countries to follow.<\/p>\n
The declaration calls for increased investments in health,
\nempowerment of individuals and the public, increased social
\nresponsibility for health and consolidation of infrastructure for
\nhealth promotion.<\/p>\n
The declaration also recommends the establishment of a global
\nalliance to accelerate health promotion activities, implement the
\ndeclaration's results to the fullest extent possible and report
\nthem at the fifth conference.<\/p>\n
Sujudi said Indonesia's health promotion programs met with the
\nrequirements of the Jakarta Declaration since the private sector
\nand non-governmental organizations were involved.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's integrated health promotion programs reflect the
\n\"healthy public policy\" as the government and private sector are
\npart of national development.<\/p>\n
Antara reported Wednesday that the WHO has approved a US$11
\nmillion grant to Indonesia for the government's health projects
\nfor two years until 1999.<\/p>\n
The news agency said the grant was aimed at improving mother
\nand child health care and lowering the mortality rate of mothers
\ngiving birth and infant mortality rates.<\/p>\n
WHO representative to Indonesia, Robert J. Kim-Farley said the
\ngrant would be channeled through the Ministry of Health and the
\noffice of the State Minister of Women's Affairs, according to the
\nnews agency.<\/p>\n
Kim-Farley said the funds would cover some projects on clean
