Parties without financial accountability<\/p>\n
There are many bad stories about political parties, which
\noften become problems rather than solutions. One of the absolute
\nfacts is that their function is to channel the people's
\naspirations during general elections. But here in Indonesia this
\nfunction has become artificial.<\/p>\n
One current problem that is particularly shameful is their
\nfinancial accountability. The Supreme Court has even sent parties
\na third written reminder about their obligation to submit their
\nfinancial reports.<\/p>\n
But not only that. The General Elections Commission (KPU), the
\norganizer of elections, has apparently filed a rather poor
\nfinancial report. It has not been able to account for some of its
\nexpenses.<\/p>\n
We are now witnessing a process where institutions normally
\nresponsible for correcting mistakes and making people aware are
\nthemselves trying to deceive the public. Political parties that
\nare supposed to take the lead in fighting corruption turn out to
\nbe corrupt themselves. They do not teach politics but self-
\ndestruction.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court should not issue mere recommendations in the
\ncases involving parties, but rather sanctions, namely rulings
\ndisbanding those parties that fail properly to report their
\nfinancial affairs.<\/p>\n
These parties exist merely as a means for their leaders to
\nmake a living. This is why civilized politics is something that
\nhas yet to come into being in this country. The political parties
\nhave neither vision nor mission. How can they say they are
\ncivilized if they are afraid of being audited transparently?<\/p>\n
