        "content": "<p>Part-time teachers demand appointment<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Some 700 part-time teachers questioned on<br>\nThursday why they were denied status as civil servants after<br>\nyears of teaching at various public schools in Central Jakarta, a<br>\ncity official said.<\/p>\n<p>Giat Suwarno, head of the Jakarta chapter of the National<br>\nEducation Department, said at a meeting, which discussed the<br>\ncity&apos;s annual working program, that those teachers were hired<br>\nbecause of an insufficient number of teachers in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Giat said the teachers had worked for the Central Jakarta<br>\npublic school system for many years, with some having taught for<br>\n25 years. &quot;They had high hopes that they would be appointed as<br>\ncivil servants,&quot; he added.<\/p>\n<p>He said their promotion should be be given first priority in<br>\nthe city administration&apos;s plan to promote new teachers in its bid<br>\nto gain regional autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;With the promotion, they will earn more and be entitled to<br>\npension,&quot; he said, noting that the current salaries of part-<br>\ntimers depended on the meager education funds allocated to each<br>\nrespective school.
