Parsendi: A joker in the pack<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Other political parties may have recruited
\ncelebrities as their campaigners, but the Party of Artistes and
\nComediennes (Parsendi) is in fact chaired by illiterate comedian
\nSri \"Milko\" Mulyati.<\/p>\n
The party was founded in the Central Java town of Surakarta
\nby, among others, Murtidjono, who is a philosophy school
\ngraduate. Two of its executives, Achmad Solechan Wachid and
\nAriyanto Heru Laksono, are both students of medical nuclear
\ntechnology at the University of Indonesia's School of Natural
\nSciences and Math.<\/p>\n
\"History shows artists and comedians have in the past been
\nused by political parties to further their interests, without
\nknowing the ideologies and visions of the organizations,\"
\nSolechan said as quoted by Ali@nsi tabloid recently. \"This party
\nwas founded to accommodate the outrage, irritation, fears and
\nhopes of the artists and comedians.\"<\/p>\n
Parsendi, with its 180 members, is not contesting the general
\nelection because, Solechan said, \"when the other parties went to
\nregister at the Ministry of Justice, we mistakenly went to the
\npolice station.\"<\/p>\n
\"Actually, Bu Milko wanted to go and register the party on the
\nlast day, but she was afraid of flying. So she canceled the
\nplan.\"<\/p>\n
When asked why they chose an illiterate person to be their
\nleader, Solechan said that some highly intelligent artists such
\nas journalist\/puppet master H. Sudjiwo Tejo and Dono of the
\nWarkop group refused the position.<\/p>\n
\"Other parties have professors and doctors as their chairmen,
\nso we chose an illiterate woman,\" he said. \"This also to show how
\nthe New Order regime failed to educate its people, so much so
\nthat a party chairperson in this age is illiterate.\"<\/p>\n
When asked for comment about Soeharto, Solechan said: \"We take
\nour hats off to Pak Harto. He really was a great teacher for the
\nnation... because he successfully created a very enduring
