Parking scandal probe finalized soon<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said yesterday that
\nthe municipal administration will soon announce the results of
\ntheir probe investigating the embezzlement of parking fees from
\nthe City Parking Authority BP Parkir.<\/p>\n
\"The investigation is still in the process and we will
\nannounce our findings as soon as possible,\" the governor told
\nreporters.<\/p>\n
He made the statement in response to the city council's demand
\non Wednesday that the municipal administration reveal the extent
\nof the corruption, which, it claims, has caused the
\nadministration to lose of billions of rupiah in parking revenues.<\/p>\n
Last February the governor ordered City Administration
\nInspector Djoko Brotosurjono to investigate the alleged
\ncorruption at BP Parkir.<\/p>\n
\"The city administration will take firm actions against any
\nofficials found involved,\" Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
Surjadi gave the order after reading a report on the
\ndifferences between the amount of funds reported by the parking
\nauthority and the bank receipts for the funds turned in by
\nprivately owned parking companies.<\/p>\n
The parking authority's files show that it received a much
\nsmaller amount of parking fees than the actual sums paid by
\nprivate companies to the City Revenue Office.<\/p>\n
A report from the parking authority showed that the total
\namount of fees collected from 147 private parking companies was
\nonly Rp 108.84 million (US$49,472) per month.<\/p>\n
If the parking authority had been managed professionally,
\naccording to the city council, the annual parking fee revenues
\nshould have reached Rp 50 billion, far above their target of only
\nRp 14.6 billion in the 1994-1995 fiscal year. (31)<\/p>",
