Parking attendants to be outfitted with PDAs<\/p>\n

Scheduled to be launched on May 26, Jakarta's new on-street
\nparking system with 180 of its 2,900 parking attendants involved
\nin unique pilot project wherein they will be equipped with hand-
\nheld computers worth Rp 17.15 million (approximately US$1990)
\neach.<\/p>\n
The city's new \"tech-trendsetting\" parking attendants will be
\npositioned in five locations across the city in the initial
\nphase, and armed with Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs),
\nspecially modified for parking fee collection.<\/p>\n
The PDAs will help the parking attendants collect parking fees
\nelectronically from motorists, so no cash would be needed in the
\ntransactions, an official said.<\/p>\n
Kunto Wibisono, vice general manager of the system operator,
\nPT Adiwira Sembada, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday that all
\nparking attendants on duty will be held responsible for the PDAs
\nin their charge, including the memory card and 20-centimeter-long
\nattached printer.<\/p>\n
The company had in stock 200 ready-to-use PDAs along with the
\nsupporting equipment, he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the price would cover mostly the cost of the
\nsoftware, which, he claimed, was the first in the world.<\/p>\n
\"We are in the process of registering the patent for both the
\nhardware and software,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The use of the PDAs is limited to parking transactions only,
\nincluding refills for parking cards. Kunto said, however, they
\nhad yet to determine the initial price of the parking cards or
\nwhere they could be purchased.<\/p>\n
Kunto said that to ensure optimum utilization of the PDAs, the
\nparking attendants will be trained in their use this month.<\/p>\n
He was optimistic that the city could expect a significant
\nincrease in city revenues because the use of PDAs would eliminate
\nthe possibility of embezzlement of the parking fees.<\/p>\n
The system is planned for eventual application all over
\nJakarta, whose 2,900 parking attendants are also to be equipped
\nwith the same gadgets by the end of the year in order to collect
\nparking fees at 14,992 parking spots across the city.<\/p>",
