Parents told to be wary of drug abuse threat<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President B.J. Habibie warned Indonesian parents
\nyesterday to step up their vigilance over the rising danger of
\ndrug abuse by the young generation.<\/p>\n
The President said parents were the ones most responsible for
\ntheir children, though teachers and society also play an
\nimportant role in their education and maturation process.<\/p>\n
According to official statistics only 0.065 percent of the
\ntotal population, or 130,000 people, are drug addicts.<\/p>\n
"Other countries' experiences show that the real number is
\nactually about 10 times that of the official data," Habibie
\nwarned during a commemoration of the International Day Against
\nDrug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the State Palace yesterday.<\/p>\n
Present at the ceremony were Coordinating Minister for
\nPeople's Welfare and Poverty Eradication Haryono Suyono, Minister
\nof Justice Muladi, Minister of Social Services Justika Sjarifudin
\nBaharsjah and dozens of social activists.<\/p>\n
Habibie said success in eradicating drug abuse would depend
\nmuch on the tireless efforts of the whole nation to prevent youth
\nfrom this horrifying addiction.<\/p>\n
"Various research shows that less religious people have a
\nhigher risk of becoming addicts rather than those who have a
\nstrong religious background," Habibie noted. (prb)<\/p>",
