Parents demonstrate at Satya Wacana<\/p>\n
SALATIGA, Central Java: Demonstrations against the rector of
\nthe Satya Wacana Christian University, John JOI Ihalauw,
\ncontinued yesterday.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's protest involved not only students and dismissed
\nteachers but also students' parents, who are frustrated by the
\nendless dispute, which has practically crippled academic
\nactivities on the campus.<\/p>\n
Tension mounted when hundreds of demonstrators marched to the
\nrector's office. But dozens of security officers deployed on the
\ncampus managed to repel them and restore order.<\/p>\n
The protesters then massed on a nearby hill, where their
\nleaders took turns to criticize Ihalauw, who sparked emotional
\nprotests when he dismissed popular outspoken academic Arief
\nBudiman last year.<\/p>\n
Ihalauw told the parents that the university's management
\nwanted to settle the dispute amicably, \"as soon as possible\".<\/p>\n
The parents, from various cities in Java, are threatening to
\ntake their protest to the founding churches unless the management
