Parents demonstrate at ITB<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): The Association of Parents of the Bandung
\nInstitute of Technology yesterday erected a huge banner on the
\ncampus supporting the college's decision to expel two students
\nand dismiss three junior lecturers deemed responsible for the
\ndeath of a freshman during an initiation period last month.<\/p>\n
The parents joined forces with staff lecturers in putting up
\nposters to state their support for the rector's move. Other
\nposters also called for the abolition of initiations and of
\nprimitive attitudes on the campus.<\/p>\n
The poster protest came a day after hundreds of poster-waving
\nstudents staged a demonstration in the campus grounds to protest
\nagainst the expulsion of their colleagues.<\/p>\n
It followed the death of Zaki Tiffany Lazuardian, 18, a first
\nyear physics student, on Jan. 8 after a rigorous 12-day
\ninitiation organized by the Student's Physics Association
\n(Himafi).<\/p>\n
The two students expelled were executives of Himafi.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Bandung chapter of the Legal Aid Foundation
\n(LBH) in an open letter to the ITB rector denounced the removal
\nof the two students.<\/p>\n
LBH maintained that if it had been established that Zaki's
\ndeath was caused by Himafi's initiation then, it should be the
\nrector himself who should have been fired.<\/p>\n
LBH contends that the continued practice of holding
\ninitiations for first year students is unhealthy and said that
\nthese rites have often become a manifestation of pent-up
\nfrustrations by those the organizers.(17)<\/p>",
