        "content": "<p>Pardoned thief escapes from jail<\/p>\n<p>PADANG, West Sumatra (JP): A convicted thief, who was<br>\nscheduled to be released on Aug. 17, seems to have gotten<br>\nimpatient and escaped from the Payakumbuh prison last week.<\/p>\n<p>The prisoner, Samsuri, had made a favorable enough impression<br>\non prison officials with his good conduct only to break out of<br>\nhis cell last Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He had been chosen for a pardon in honor of the 50th<br>\nanniversary of Indonesia's independence on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n<p>\"We had decided to release him for his favorable behavior. But<br>\nobviously he has now blown his chances,\" chief of the West<br>\nSumatra justice office Atjeng Zakaria told Antara Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Zakaria, although officials have not formally<br>\nannounced the names of prisoners to receive remissions, Samsuri<br>\nknew he was one of the recipients after checking with the<br>\nPayakumbuh prison warden.<\/p>\n<p>The prison has been rocked by the escapes of five other<br>\nconvicts over the past several months and none have been<br>\nrecaptured.
