        "content": "<p>Papuans protest new provinces<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Papua: A crowd of some 100 students demonstrated on<br>\nMonday before the provincial legislature against Jakarta&apos;s move<br>\nto split Papua into three provinces, arguing it would attract<br>\nmore migrants to the natural resources-rich, yet sparely<br>\npopulated region.<\/p>\n<p>Calling themselves the Mid-Mountain People&apos;s Care Forum, the<br>\nprotesters, mostly students, argued that dividing Papua in three<br>\nprovinces benefited Jakarta but would harm locals.<\/p>\n<p>They feared an influx of migrants, reasoning Papuans were<br>\nunlikely to fill all the new posts needed to run the two new<br>\nprovincial governments.<\/p>\n<p>Locals have long complained about discrimination by migrants<br>\nsince the region came under Indonesian rule during the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Poverty and unemployment remains a problem in Papua despite<br>\nits advanced exploitation of natural resources.
