Papuan schools close due to lack of teachers, transportation<\/p>\n
Many schools in remote areas of Irian Jaya have had to halt
\nclasses due to the lack of teachers as well as poor
\ntransportation for students trying to get to school, an activist
\nsaid on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Alfon Ongge, a youth activist, blamed the administration for
\nignoring the people's right to education and neglecting the
\nconstruction of transportation infrastructure, so badly needed
\nfor the development of remote areas.<\/p>\n
\"The administration is not paying serious attention to these
\ndifficulties,\" he said as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
The majority of Papuans reside in the hinterland of the
\nprovince and rely on rudimentary transportation facilities to
\nreach schools located in different regions.<\/p>\n
\"We cannot blame the teachers (for refusing assignments in
\nremote areas), because it is the government, especially the
\nagencies directly involved, who should be held responsible for
\nthis situation,\" Ongge said.<\/p>\n
He suggested that the provincial administration allocate more
