Panel set up to discuss UN reform<\/p>\n

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has set up a special panel to
\ndetermine Indonesia's position on the planned enlargement of the
\nUnited Nation Security Council (UNSC), former foreign minister
\nAli Alatas announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Alatas, a special envoy for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan,
\nsaid the panel would decide whether Indonesia would choose the
\n\"Model A\" or \"Model B\" proposal for the enlargement of UNSC
\nseats, or formulate another option.<\/p>\n
Alatas made the statement after meeting with Susilo to report
\non his new job as Annan's special envoy.<\/p>\n
He said the 45-member panel held its first meeting on Thursday
\nnight at the presidential office, which was chaired by President
\nSusilo.<\/p>\n
The panel includes senior diplomats, international observers
\nand non-governmental organization workers, such as HS Dillon,
\nTodung Mulya Lubis and Felia Salim.<\/p>\n
Model A and B proposals involve the distribution of seats
\nbetween four major regions of Africa, the Asia Pacific, Europe
\nand America, in which each region gets six new permanent seats.<\/p>\n
Under Model A, the Asia-Pacific region with its 56 UN members
\nwould get two new permanent seats in addition to China, plus
\nthree seats would be rotated every two years.<\/p>\n
Model B proposes no new permanent seats but creates a new
\ncategory of eight four-year renewable seats and one new two-year
\nnonpermanent (and nonrenewable) seat, divided among Africa, Asia
\nand the Pacific, Europe and the Americas.<\/p>",
