Panel presents report on RI rule<\/p>\n
EAST TIMOR: A United Nations-sanctioned panel investigating human
\nrights violations during Indonesia's bloody 24-year occupation of
\nEast Timor on Monday presented its findings to the country's
\npresident.<\/p>\n
The report, which is likely to be scathingly critical of
\nIndonesian rule, will not be made public until Nov. 28, when
\nPresident Xanana Gusmao will formally submit it to parliament and
\nto UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.<\/p>\n
"The final report addresses a significant portion of the
\nhistory of our people," said Aniceto Guterres, who headed the
\nCommission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation set up by the
\nUnited Nations in 2001 while the world body was still governing
\nthe half-island territory.<\/p>\n
Jakarta has refused to deliver officials responsible for the
\nbloodshed to a court in East Timor, and the panel's findings are
\nlikely to result in intensified calls for the Indonesians to be
\ntried by an international war crimes tribunal like those for
\nRwanda or the former Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n
"If history is a description of deeds, this report is about
\nacts perpetrated in violation of human rights," Guterres said. --
