        "content": "<p>Panel breaks off <br>\n'tense' debate<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AFP): A Thai parliamentary panel has broken off <br>\ndebate on a proposed anti-coup constitutional amendment because <br>\nof rising tension between government MPs and pro-military <br>\nsenators, a committee member said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The House Senate committee set up to scrutinize a series of <br>\ndraft amendments decided to drop discussion for the time being <br>\nafter heated debate on Thursday, MP Preecha Suwannathat told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>Leading academic Assadang Panikkabutr, also a committee <br>\nmember, had proposed the amendment, under which Thai citizens <br>\ncould refuse to disobey the orders of any government that came to <br>\npower through a coup d'etat.<\/p>\n<p>Government representatives on the committee generally <br>\nsupported the proposal while some senators firmly opposed it, <br>\nsaid Preecha, who is also a law lecturer.<\/p>",
