Pandit Nehru gets RI's award<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has conferred the Bintang Republik
\nAdipurna award for meritorious services on the late Pandit
\nJawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, for his strong
\nsupport during Indonesia's independence struggle 50 years ago.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi said in a statement that
\nthe award was presented by Ambassador Adolf Sahala Rajagukguk
\nduring a ceremony at the Wisma Duta on Dec. 12.<\/p>\n
Accepting the award was Sonia Gandhi, the wife of the late
\nRajiv Gandhi, who was Nehru's grandson and who also served as
\nprime minister of India.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Rajagukguk also presented Bintang Jasa Utama awards
\nto Biju Patnaik, a former chief minister of Orissa, and Mohammad
\nYunus and P.R.S. Mani, both former consuls of India in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The awards were given to Indian leaders who provided moral and
\ndiplomatic supports during the critical period of Indonesia's
\nstruggle after the country proclaimed its independence on Aug.
\n17, 1945, according to the embassy statement.<\/p>\n
The decision to confer the award was signed by President
\nSoeharto in a decree dated Aug. 7, which apart from recognizing
\ntheir \"extraordinary services\" to Indonesia's independence
\nstruggle also underlined the contribution the recipients made
\ntowards enhancing cooperation between Indonesia and India.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Rajagukguk in his speech also underlined the
\ncontribution India gave to help Indonesia consolidate the
\nindependence it just proclaimed and expressed his hope that the
\ntwo countries could continue to forge and strengthen the existing
\nclose ties.<\/p>\n
The award giving ceremony was also attended by India's State
\nMinister of Foreign Affairs R.L. Bhatia and a number of member of
\nparliaments and senior India government officials, the embassy
