PAN to discuss chairmanship<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The National Mandate Party (PAN) is set to hold a
\nnational meeting this Sunday to discuss a plan by its chairman,
\nAmien Rais, to relinquish his chairmanship of the party.<\/p>\n
Amien Rais, who is also speaker of the People's Consultative
\nAssembly (MPR), is considering quitting his position in PAN amid
\nmounting pressure for public officials to end their dual roles in
\nthe executive or legislative institutions and in political
\nparties.<\/p>\n
Hatta Radjasa, secretary-general of the party, said on Monday
\nthat the party's executive board had sent invitations to PAN's
\nprovincial chapters throughout Indonesia requesting that send
\nrepresentatives to the meeting, which will be held in Bidakara
\ncomplex here.<\/p>\n
"What is planned by Amien is serious, and we must discuss it
\nthoroughly," said Hatta, who is also the state minister of
\nresearch and technology, on the sidelines of a meeting between
\nhis ministry and the House of Representatives (DPR).<\/p>\n
There has been growing opposition within the party to Amien's
\nproposal to quit, but since the issue would also affect the
\npublic, the party must discuss this seriously in the meeting,
\nHatta claimed.<\/p>\n
The issue of dual roles came to the fore after the chairman of
\nthe National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) Ermaya criticized
\nmany politicians for concurrently serving at top public posts,
\nsaying the dual role could constitute a conflict of interest.
