SURABAYA (JP): Unidentified people riding motorbikes threw
\nfireworks and plastic bags filled with gasoline at the residences
\nof five members of the National Mandate Party in different
\nlocations at Bondowoso and Cerme regencies, East Java, in the
\nsmall hours of Friday.<\/p>\n
Chairman of East Java chapter of the party Sulthon Amien
\ndeplored the attacks on Saturday, urging the police to
\ninvestigate the crime.<\/p>\n
Some parts of the houses were set ablaze by the fire, which
\nwas soon put down by neighbors.<\/p>\n
The attackers also set ablaze the house of Golkar party member
\nSurahman in the Grujugan area of Cerme.<\/p>\n
Bondowoso police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sobrie Effendy Surya

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara (JP): Two convicts sentenced to
\ndeath for murder were executed on Friday midnight after their
\nrequest for a presidential pardon was rejected.<\/p>\n
Gerson Pandie and Fredik Soru, both 34, were killed by the
\ngunshots of two different firing squads, deep in the eucalyptus
\nwoods in Oekabiti district.<\/p>\n
The two, along with Dance Soru, were found guilty by Kupang
\nDistrict Court 12 years ago for robbing and brutally killing an
\nold couple, as well as their two grandchildren. The defendants
\nwere sentenced to death.<\/p>\n
Dance died last year at Penfui penitentiary in an accident, in
\nwhich he was electrocuted.<\/p>\n
The higher courts had earlier upheld the death sentence, while
\nthe President turned down their request for clemency.<\/p>\n
In his last written message, Gerson called upon juvenile

HANOI (Reuters): Senior Southeast Asian officials wrapped up
\non Saturday a three-day regional security meeting in Hanoi with
\ntalks on a protocol to make the region a nuclear-free zone.<\/p>\n
Officials from the Association of South East Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN) met on Saturday morning with diplomats from five nuclear-
\ncapable nations - China, France, Russia, Britain and the United
\nStates - to discuss the proposal.<\/p>\n
ASEAN has declared itself a nuclear weapons free zone.<\/p>\n
Delegations from the United States and North Korea left the
\ncountry on Saturday without a hoped-for meeting on the sidelines
\nof the forum to reopen dialogue between the superpower and the
\nStalinist country it calls a threat to world stability.<\/p>\n
The Hanoi talks were a preliminary meeting to set the agenda
\nfor the annual ASEAN Regional Forum to be held in the Vietnamese

BANGKOK (Reuters): Six months after a nasty accident, Rama IX
\nis coming out of his shell.<\/p>\n
The 20-year-old male turtle, named after a busy road in
\ncentral Bangkok, this week became the first turtle in Thailand to
\nget a man-made shell.<\/p>\n
\"It's like a little helmet,\" veterinarian Nantarika Chansue
\nsaid of the turtle's new fiberglass shell.<\/p>\n
Rama IX, who lived in a pond beside the busy thoroughfare, was
\ncrossing the road when a pickup truck ran over him in October
\nlast year.<\/p>\n
Two-thirds of his natural shell was smashed in the accident,
\nshards of it piercing his lungs and other internal organs,
\nNantarika said.<\/p>\n
Nantarika used wire and superglue at a Chulalongkorn
\nUniversity animal clinic to attach the man-made shell on Friday,
\nprotecting him from leeches and egg-laying insects during the
\nyear it will take his real shell to grow back.<\/p>\n

The accident happened in Kuwana City in the western Japan

\nsmashing a car, a local police official said.<\/p>\n
\"We have so far confirmed the death of two people on board the
\nhelicopter and four on the Cessna,\" a police official said.<\/p>\n
Television footage showed two houses burned black and plane
\nparts scattered hundreds of metres apart.<\/p>\n
The owner of one of the houses said he witnessed the accident
\nwhile he was in a nearby field.<\/p>\n
