PAM water contains bacteria<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The quality of PAM water supplied to West
\nJakarta area is poor, recent research reveals.<\/p>\n
The research, by the West Jakarta Mayoralty Office of Health,
\nfound that 25 percent of the water contained bacteria, said
\nTaufiqurrohman, the chief researcher, yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said the research was carried out between June and
\nSeptember this year on 93 water tanks in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The most bacteria-contaminated water was found in Pegadungan
\nand Tegal Alur.<\/p>\n
\"There are 240 bacteria in each 100 milliliter of water,\" he
\nsaid of those samples.<\/p>\n
Taufiqurrohman said this indicated that the raw water
\nprocessed by PAM Jaya was in poor quality, while the process
\nitself was unhealthy.<\/p>\n
Similar types of bacteria are also found in well water in the
\ncity, he said.<\/p>\n
Another recent study conducted on 279 wells found that 85
\npercent of them were polluted with bacteria.<\/p>\n
The report said that the bacteria-contaminated water was taken
\nfrom wells which were too close to septic tanks.<\/p>\n
Most of the well water in the southern areas of the city were
\nhighly acidic, while well water in the northern part of Jakarta
\ncontained less chloride and zinc, the report said.<\/p>\n
Production and Technical Manager of PAM Jaya, Rama Budi,
\nrecently acknowledged the low quality of PAM Jaya's water.<\/p>\n
He said that the low quality water was caused by the poor
\nquality of the raw material.<\/p>\n
\"Some of the raw water is taken from the Ciliwung river, which
\nis very dirty and contains a lot of garbage,\" he said. (29)<\/p>",
