        "content": "<p>Voter registration and electoral roll updates began across the\noccupied West Bank on Saturday, ahead of Palestinian legislative\nelections scheduled for 28 November \u2014 the first such vote in nearly 20\nyears.<\/p>\n<p>Registration centres opened to the public on Saturday morning, and\nthe process will run until Wednesday evening (19 August), according to\nthe schedule announced by the Central Elections Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission urged eligible citizens whose names are not yet on the\nelectoral roll to register, and asked already-registered voters to\nupdate their information if necessary. It stressed that registration is\none of the important stages in the electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission said the election will be held in the West Bank and\nthe Gaza Strip, including Jerusalem, with Palestinians aged 17 and over\neligible to register.<\/p>\n<p>The data-updating process is only being carried out in the West Bank,\nwhile Gaza residents are automatically registered based on Palestinian\npopulation data, the Commission added.<\/p>\n<p>The vote will be the first Palestinian legislative election since\n2006, held after years of internal Palestinian division and the war in\nGaza.<\/p>\n<p>The election is seen as a test of efforts to rebuild Palestinian\ninstitutions and renew governmental legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, Hamas political bureau member Husam Badran said\nthe group would participate in the election as part of the broadest\npossible national coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree on 9\nJuly setting 28 November as the date for the legislative election.<\/p>\n<p>The date of the presidential election will be announced later, with\nthe vote planned for the first quarter of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Commission, candidate registration will take place\nfrom 26 September to 7 October, while the campaign period begins on 6\nNovember, ahead of the vote on 28 November.<\/p>",
