Painting stolen

A painting has been stolen from an exhibit at the Stage
\nrestaurant at the Ratu Plaza shopping center in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Michael, the manager of the Stage, told YThe Jakarta Post late
\nlast week that the stolen painting, entitled Grandma Moses Goes
\nto the Tambora, was one of many works by an American artist
\nnicknamed Tompel on display at the restaurant.<\/p>\n
The exhibit continues through April 20.<\/p>\n
Michael said the theft occurred last Friday afternoon, when
\nthe electricity was out.<\/p>\n
He said he had no idea who had stolen the artwork valued at Rp
\n300,000 (US$140), which had just been marked sold. (jsk)<\/p>\n
Surjadi ends slum
\nupgrading program<\/p>\n
In a weekend ceremony at the Ujung Menteng subdistrict office
\nin East Jakarta, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja announced the
\ncompletion of the slum upgrading program started last year.<\/p>\n
The citywide urban renewal program was initiated as part of
\nnationwide activities for last year's National Social Solidarity
\nDay, which began on Dec. 20.<\/p>\n
The program provided social services, public facilities and
\nrepaired and upgraded housing for the people living in the least
\ndeveloped areas of the capital.<\/p>\n
The Solidarity Program was expected to promote a feeling of
\ntogetherness and to motivate individuals to take part in
\nactivities which involve the livelihood of many.<\/p>\n
Of the more than Rp 4.5 billion spent on the rehabilitation
\nprogram, Rp 1.5 billion was contributed by the central
\ngovernment, Surjadi said. The rest was obtained through community
\nparticipation and donations from businessmen.<\/p>\n
There are 11 subdistricts in Jakarta which fall under the
\ncategory of least developed areas. One is in Central Jakarta, two
\nare in West Jakarta and eight in North Jakarta. (06)<\/p>\n
Police capture
\nmurder suspect<\/p>\n
The Cakung police arrested a food shop owner late last week on
\ncharges of killing a thug.<\/p>\n
Maj. Tjokorde Suyasa, chief of the Cakung police, said Friday
\nthat the murderer suspect, Wito Handoyo bin Samaun, 25, was
\narrested at 2 a.m. at his home, which also functions as a shop.<\/p>\n
Wito, a resident of Rawa Teratai subdistrict, Cakung district,
\nEast Jakarta, has been charged with killing Ahmad Zaini, 24, who
\nlived in the same neighborhood on March 4.<\/p>\n
Ahmad's body was discovered early in the morning amid
\nshrubbery on Jl. Raya Bekasi in front of the Pulau Gadung Steel
\nfactory, close to a truck terminal.<\/p>\n
Police initially suspected he had been stabbed to death by one
\nof the truck drivers working there. Ahmad, who claimed to
\nsupervise and protect the area, was known to have extorted money
\nfrom the truckers frequently.<\/p>\n
Police later discovered clues which led them to shift their
\nsuspicion to Wito.<\/p>\n
During interrogation, Wito said he had taken vengeance upon
\nAhmad for all the terror and hassle the thug had imposed on him

One-way traffic
\nin Tn. Abang<\/p>\n
It is nearly impossible to introduce a one-way traffic policy
\nin Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, because there are too many
\nstreet traders on the roads, says a city official.<\/p>\n
Making a bad situation worse, both drivers and passengers do
\nnot have the discipline to adhere to a one-way traffic
\nregulation, said J.P. Sepang, the head of the City Land
\nTransportation and Traffic Control Office over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Sepang said he plans to couple one-way traffic in Tanah Abang
\nwith the reduction of the number of the city's traffic lights
\nbecause these have the potential to engender congestion, which
\nprompts drivers to violate a one-way traffic policy.(06)<\/p>",
