        "content": "<p>Painter Amri gets doctorate<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA: The Yogyakarta State University (UNY) awarded on<br>\nThursday an honorary doctorate to well-known batik painter Amri<br>\nYahya in recognition of his promotion of batik arts, his<br>\ndedication to the arts, and his outstanding works.<\/p>\n<p>UNY is the first Indonesian university to bestow an honorary<br>\ndoctorate on the artist.<\/p>\n<p>The late expressionist painter Affandi received a similar<br>\naward from the National University of Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>According to Suyanto, rector of UNY, the honoring of Amri<br>\nYahya was part of the university&apos;s commitment to upholding<br>\nnational education and character-building.<\/p>\n<p>Muhammadiyah chairman Ahmad Syafii Maarif, noted poet Taufiq<br>\nIsmail, Yogyakarta governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, and South<br>\nSumatra&apos;s governor Rosihan Arsyad, as well as the members of the<br>\nuniversity&apos;s academic council, were in attendance at the<br>\nceremony.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The style of Amri&apos;s paintings has inspired many artists since<br>\nthe 1970s. His works have also been internationally acclaimed. A<br>\nlarge number of his works have joined the collections of world<br>\nfigures,&quot; said Suminto A.
