Overseas speakers fail to show up<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Five overseas speakers failed to show up at an
\ninternational seminar on the impact of climate change on the
\nlocal environment held by Udayana University on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"Their failure to come here is possibly the result of the
\nimpact of the U.S. military attacks on Afghanistan, even though
\nthis hasn't been directly mentioned,\" Adiputra, chairman of the
\nseminar's organizing committee, said.<\/p>\n
He said that three of the five foreign speakers were British,
\nwhile one was American and one Indian.<\/p>\n
Bill Stout of the agricultural engineering department of a
\nTexas university, for example, gave notice of the cancellation of
\nhis visit only by e-mail.<\/p>\n
Bali Deputy Governor I Gusti Bagus Alit Putra said at the
\nopening of the seminar that he could understand the five
\nspeakers' decision not to come to Bali, even though the security
\nsituation in Indonesia, especially Bali, was relatively safe.<\/p>\n
Twenty Canadian youths who were scheduled to take part in a
\nthree-month camping trip in Bali within the framework of the
\nIndonesian-Canadian youth exchange program, have also canceled
\ntheir visit<\/p>\n
Alit Putra said that such cancellations were not necessary as
\nBali was still safe for foreign visitors. --Antara<\/p>",
