Overpass planned for Roxy Mas area<\/p>\n

Traffic jams around the area of Roxy Mas shopping center in West
\nJakarta are expected to worsen next year following the city
\nadministration's decision to construct a 2.2 kilometer-long
\noverpass for the busway special lane.<\/p>\n
\"The proposal to build the overpass for the busway lane was
\nbecause we thought it was impossible to use the existing road,
\n(Jl Hasyim Ashari) which only has two lanes in each direction,\"
\nAssistant to City Secretary for Development Affairs IGKG Suena
\ntold reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The administration plans to set up a new busway corridor from
\nKalideres in West Jakarta to Pulo Gebang in East Jakarta via Roxy
\nand the National Monument (Monas) Park.<\/p>\n
Suena did not give details on the project cost.<\/p>\n
The Pulo Gebang-Monas route is expected to become operational
\nin June 2005 while the Monas-Kalideres corridor later in October
\n2005.<\/p>\n
\"While the construction of the overpass is underway, the
\nbusway will temporarily occupy one lane of the existing road
\ncolored with red,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Suena said the City Transportation Agency would further study
\nthe possibility if the overpass busway lane could be used by the
\npublic. \"The overpass will be too expensive if it is only used
\nfor the busway.\"<\/p>\n
The transportation agency head Rustam Effendy Sidabutar said
\nthe administration would not punish vehicles for passing in the
\nnew busway corridors.<\/p>\n
\"Traffic restraints, like three-in-one traffic policy, are not
\nfor the busway but they are more to reduce the number of private
\nvehicles traveling along restricted zones,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The administration has extended the time of implementation of
\nthe three-in-one traffic policy this year. Each private vehicle
\nis required to have at least three passengers along the
\nrestricted zone in order to encourage motorists to start using
\nthe busway.<\/p>\n
However, some surveys showed that only a few private car users
\nhave switched to use the busway due to the absence of a reliable
\nfeeder system.<\/p>\n
The administration also plans to build three other overpasses
\non Jl. RE Martadinata and Pasar Pagi, both in North Jakarta, and
\nin Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Motorists who often travel along those routes are advised to
\nseek alternate routes to avoid chronic traffic congestion.<\/p>",
