        "content": "<p>Over 470,000 sit university admission exams<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Nearly 472,000 senior high school graduates<br>\nthroughout the country, excluding riot-torn provinces of Maluku,<br>\nNorth Maluku and Aceh, turned up for the entrance exams for state<br>\nuniversities on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The national admission test committee executive secretary,<br>\nSoemalijah Soewondo, said the students competed for approximately<br>\n74,000 seats at 45 universities.<\/p>\n<p>Results of the test will be announced on Aug. 7.<\/p>\n<p>The number of the participants dropped slightly by 1.8 percent<br>\nfrom last year&apos;s figure, 480,218, Soemalijah said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the current regulation, the participants are<br>\nallowed to choose two different faculties or universities. They<br>\nare also allowed to choose universities outside their hometowns.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of National Education Yahya Muhaimin said entrance<br>\ntests in Maluku would be delayed indefinitely and the state<br>\nPattimura University there will be divided into two following the<br>\ndivision of the province into Maluku and North Maluku.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the university campus in Ambon was razed by an armed<br>\nmob on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>In Aceh, the test is delayed until Saturday as fire razed<br>\nthe Madjid Ibrahim student gymnasium hall at state Syiah Kuala<br>\nUniversity on Monday night, burning some 10,000 documents and the<br>\nexam papers.<\/p>\n<p>Aceh Besar police chief Superintendent Sayed Husaini said<br>\npreliminary investigation showed that the fire was due to a short<br>\nelectric circuit problem.<\/p>\n<p>Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta plans to accept 5,208<br>\nstudents, including 986 athletes and students who will be<br>\nrecruited through special tests held in their respective<br>\nprovinces.<\/p>\n<p>In Surabaya, 193 of the 33,510 registrants failed to turn up.<br>\n&quot;The reason for their absence is still not clear,&quot; said Nadjadji<br>\nAnwar, who was in charge of the test.<\/p>\n<p>In Medan, University of North Sumatra rector, Chairuddin<br>\nLubis, complained many participants came late because they were<br>\nconfused finding the venues for the exams.<\/p>\n<p>In Banjarmasin, Lambung Mangkurat University discovered that<br>\n10 percent of 609 applicants for the special admission test<br>\n(PMDK) are drug addicts.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Ten percent of them, based on urine tests, are positively<br>\ndrugs users,&quot; Antara quoted local officials as saying.<\/p>\n<p>In Semarang, the test took place at the two campuses and high<br>\nschool buildings in the Central Java capital of<br>\nSemarang.(49\/50\/har\/45\/edt\/sur\/prb)<\/p>",
