Over 400 babies malnourished<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: As many as 400 children under five in
\nthis province have been found suffering from malnutrition and 173
\nothers from marasmus, East Java deputy governor Imam Soepardi
\nsaid here on Monday.<\/p>\n
Sixty-two of the children live in Sidoarjo district, 19
\nothers in Surabaya, 18 in Ponorogo, 17 in Blitar and the rest are
\nscattered through 33 subdistricts in the province, Soepardi said.<\/p>\n
He did not reveal the number of deaths of severely
\nmalnourished babies in the area.<\/p>\n
The effects of malnutrition across the country triggered
\nmainly by the prolonged economic crisis have already killed a
\nnumber of infants in other areas.<\/p>\n
In March, one infant died of marasmus in Tangerang while seven
\nothers were treated at the local general hospital for severe
\nmalnutrition.<\/p>\n
Between August and January, at least four babies aged between
\nfour months and three years in the Mulyaharja village of Bogor
\ndied of marasmus.<\/p>\n
Some other local babies were under medical supervision in
\ncommunity health centers.<\/p>\n
Soepardi said the East Java administration office has called
\nall district heads and mayors to immediately help solve the
\nproblem in the best possible manner.<\/p>\n
"District heads and mayors in the province need not feel
\nembarrassed to report the facts because the problem should be
\novercome as soon as possible," he said.<\/p>\n
According to Soepardi, the local administration has provided
\n"Modisko", a supplementary nutriment made of milk powder, full
\ncream and palm sugar. The nutriment has been distributed free to
