        "content": "<p>Over 400 alleged extremists checked in last three years<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): More than 400 people have been interrogated by<br>\nthe City Military Command in the last three years for alleged<br>\ninvolvement in a Moslem extremist group.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesman Lt. Col. Didi Supandi said yesterday that the people<br>\nwere suspected of being affiliated to movements which struggled<br>\nfor the establishment of an Islamic state in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;All of them were released after interrogation. There has been<br>\nno detentions,&quot; Didi told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the military will keep a close watch on the suspected<br>\nMoslem militants, all residents of Jakarta, Tangerang and Bekasi.<\/p>\n<p>The Armed Forces (ABRI) faction of the House of<br>\nRepresentatives reported on Tuesday that, up to December last<br>\nyear, the City Military Command had arrested 428 people suspected<br>\nof being Moslem militants.<\/p>\n<p>One of them, identified as Moch. Rais Abasex, will be brought<br>\nto court, said legislator Hari Sabarno of the faction.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that a former political prisoner of a &quot;right<br>\nextremist group&quot; had been active again in campaigning for the<br>\nestablishment of an Islamic state in Indonesia through &quot;harsh<br>\nsermons&quot; and the publication of pamphlets.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the suspects have allegedly distributed a book<br>\npraising the late Kartosuwiryo, the leader of the outlawed Darul<br>\nIslam sect, the report added.<\/p>\n<p>Kartosuwiryo launched a separatist movement and proclaimed the<br>\nexistence of an Indonesian Islamic Republic in West Java before<br>\nhis group was banned in 1949.<\/p>\n<p>Although the majority of Indonesia&apos;s more than 195 million<br>\nresidents are Moslems, the country is not an Islamic state.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian constitution guarantees religious freedom, but<br>\nthe government has cracked down on alleged extremist religious<br>\nmovements said to be involved in political activities.(29)<\/p>",
