Over 370 servicemen punished since January<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Military Police have punished 24
\nservicemen and police officers for various violations in the last
\nmonth, bringing the total to 376 since January, Commander Col.
\nDjasri Marin said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Fifteen of the officers were found to have committed crimes,
\neight to have breached military discipline and one to have
\nviolated a traffic law, Djasri said. They were all caught during
\nlast month's discipline drive among military men.<\/p>\n
Most of the violators were members of the Army, he said.<\/p>\n
Djasri said that some of the servicemen and police were
\ndismissed, while the others were sent to jail by military
\ntribunals, or punished physically.<\/p>\n
He appealed to the public to report any crimes committed by
\nmembers of the military or police officers to the Military
\nPolice.<\/p>\n
\"The Military Police will not hesitate to take tough action
\nagainst any military violators,\" the colonel said.<\/p>\n
With the 24 violators, a total of 376 people have been
\npunished from January to October, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The Military Police also plans to take actions against those
\nfound trading in military uniforms and equipment,\" he said. He
\nsaid that the man posing as an Army captain, who was arrested in
\nWest Jakarta on Wednesday, had illegally procured the uniform he
\nwas wearing.<\/p>\n
Djasri said military clothes and equipment are sold illegally
\nin the city's markets, such as Senen and Tanah Abang in Central
\nJakarta and Plumpang in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We will increase supervision to prevent officers from selling
\ntheir military uniforms and equipment,\" Djasri said.<\/p>\n
Shots<\/p>\n
Djasri also said that the cases of the three military men
\narrested for firing shots at a five-star hotel and headquarters
\nin Central Jakarta had been processed.<\/p>\n
The dossiers of the three will be handed over to the military
\nprosecutors' office soon.<\/p>\n
Capt. Rusli, head of the City Military Intelligence Body, told
\nThe Jakarta Post that the suspects, identified as Bambang, Sugeng
\nand Khasan, are a marine corporal and privates respectively.<\/p>\n
The three are charged with not reporting the possession of a
\ngun. The gun belonged to a former serviceman identified as
\nPrabowo, who is now in police custody.<\/p>\n
If proven guilty they could get a maximum sentence of two
\nyears in prison.<\/p>\n
Rusli said the gun used by the suspects was a 7.62 mm Mauser.
\nThe shots were fired while they were trying out the Belgium-made
\nsniping rifle Prabowo had stolen.<\/p>\n
The owner of the gun is Hengky Setiawan, chief of the Cirebon
\nbranch of the Indonesian Shooting Association (Perbakin), Rusli
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
So far the military police have not yet found any connection
\nbetween the gunshots and the wedding of film star Onky Alexander
\nand businesswoman Paula Saroinsong.<\/p>\n
The bullets broke windows at the hotel on the morning of
\nSunday, Oct. 29. The couple held their wedding reception there in
