Over 1,300 workers on strike<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Over 1300 workers of PT Supra Busana Yasa
\nmarched to the City Council building on Tuesday, in protest over
\nwhat they claimed was unfair treatment by the company.<\/p>\n
The protesting workers, mostly female, started walking from
\nthe garment factory to the City Council building -- 15-km away --
\nat 8.30 a.m. The procession held up traffic for several hours.<\/p>\n
Thirty-four workers representing their colleagues, were
\nreceived by councilors A. Saragih and Supardal from commission II
\nwhich oversees manpower affairs.<\/p>\n
Then they were given the opportunity to talk to several
\nofficials of the company.<\/p>\n
The meeting was brokered by the Tangerang office of the
\nmanpower ministry, some members of the regional board of the All
\nIndonesia Workers Union Federation (SPSI) and a number of
\ncouncilors.<\/p>\n
The workers raised various complaints, including the high-
\nhanded approach to dismissals by the management which they
\npointed out was not in line with the existing regulations, and
\nthe company's production target which they described as \"overly
\nambitious.\"<\/p>\n
They also demanded that their meal allowances be increased and
\nthat they be given two days of paid menstruation leave every
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
Following lengthy discussions which lasted more than three
\nhours both the workers and the company's management finally
\nreached an agreement.<\/p>\n
The management bowed to several of the demands, promising to
\ncomply with the rules of the manpower ministry pertaining to
\ndismissal of workers.<\/p>\n
The company promised to review the current meal allowances and
\ngranted the demand that female workers be given the two days of
\npaid leave.<\/p>\n
It also promised the production target would be reviewed and
\nreassessed in accordance with the number of workers available and
\ntheir capacity.(18\/bas).<\/p>",
