        "content": "<p>Over 1,300 workers on strike<\/p>\n<p>TANGERANG (JP): Over 1300 workers of PT Supra Busana Yasa<br>\nmarched to the City Council building on Tuesday, in protest over<br>\nwhat they claimed was unfair treatment by the company.<\/p>\n<p>The protesting workers, mostly female, started walking from<br>\nthe garment factory to the City Council building -- 15-km away --<br>\nat 8.30 a.m. The procession held up traffic for several hours.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-four workers representing their colleagues, were<br>\nreceived by councilors A. Saragih and Supardal from commission II<br>\nwhich oversees manpower affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then they were given the opportunity to talk to several<br>\nofficials of the company.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was brokered by the Tangerang office of the<br>\nmanpower ministry, some members of the regional board of the All<br>\nIndonesia Workers Union Federation (SPSI) and a number of<br>\ncouncilors.<\/p>\n<p>The workers raised various complaints, including the high-<br>\nhanded approach to dismissals by the management which they<br>\npointed out was not in line with the existing regulations, and<br>\nthe company's production target which they described as \"overly<br>\nambitious.\"<\/p>\n<p>They also demanded that their meal allowances be increased and<br>\nthat they be given two days of paid menstruation leave every<br>\nmonth.<\/p>\n<p>Following lengthy discussions which lasted more than three<br>\nhours both the workers and the company's management finally<br>\nreached an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The management bowed to several of the demands, promising to<br>\ncomply with the rules of the manpower ministry pertaining to<br>\ndismissal of workers.<\/p>\n<p>The company promised to review the current meal allowances and<br>\ngranted the demand that female workers be given the two days of<br>\npaid leave.<\/p>\n<p>It also promised the production target would be reviewed and<br>\nreassessed in accordance with the number of workers available and<br>\ntheir capacity.(18\/bas).<\/p>",
