        "content": "<p>Over 12,500 workers lose jobs in Bekasi<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Bekasi branch of the All-Indonesia Workers<br>\nUnion Federation has helped arranged the dismissal of 12,586<br>\nworkers between October 1997 and last month, an official said<br>\nover the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The branch's secretary, R. Abdullah, said that the<br>\nfederation's role included mostly negotiations on severance pay<br>\nthe fired workers were entitled to.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout last year, the federation helped settle 123 labor<br>\ndisputes in Bekasi, the highest it has handled ever, Abdullah<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, the number of industrial disputes handled had<br>\nnever exceeded 100 a year, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The current economic crisis has forced more and more<br>\ncompanies to close down,\" he said, reported Antara.
