Our future is at stake<\/p>\n
The economic team of Indonesian President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri is putting our future on the line following its
\ndecision to opt for Post-Program Monitoring (PPM) in ending the
\ncountry's cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).<\/p>\n
By the end of this year, Indonesia will no longer sign letters
\nof intent with the IMF. But by opting for the PPM the country
\nwill remain under the IMF's monitoring and evaluation.<\/p>\n
As a result of choosing this option, Indonesia's debt of
\nUS$9.2 billion will have to be paid off by the year 2010, with an
\nannual installment ranging from $900 million to $1 billion.<\/p>\n
Two blocks have emerged in the history of our economic
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
The first block is more friendly with the IMF because it
\nbelieves in the importance of economic liberalism and is
\nenthusiastic about free trade and globalization.<\/p>\n
The second block is more careful and proactive in national
\neconomic development. It is always suspicious of economic
\nliberalism and globalization.<\/p>\n
When Indonesia was plunged into the economic crisis, Soeharto
\nand his cronies, the Golkar Party, the bureaucracy and the
\nmilitary were blamed, but nobody pointed their finger at the
\ncountry's economists.<\/p>\n
We are afraid that our economy will plunge once again into
\ncrisis due to misperceptions in the handling of our economy.<\/p>\n
Our future is at stake, but there has been no commitment or
\nmoral responsibility from our economists.<\/p>\n
