When inaugurating the new town of Kuala Kencana and the PT
\nFreeport Indonesia environmental laboratory at East Timika, Fak
\nFak in Irian Jaya on Tuesday, President Soeharto specifically
\nasked the mining company to constantly heed the anxieties of the
\npopulation regarding the possible negative affects of its
\noperations. In his address the President warned that the
\ngovernment would not tolerate mining activities which damaged the
\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
In this connection it is appropriate to note the statement by
\nHead of East Java Prosecutor's Office Sudjono C. Atmonegoro in
\nSurabaya recently that damage to the environment, if left
\nunheeded, could crimes endanger the safety of people more than
\nordinary crimes.<\/p>\n
In this context we have seen many disputes and conflicting
\narguments erupt between non-governmental organizations and
\ncompanies concerning the effects of contamination and
\nenvironmental damage. Specifically, the dispute which has been
\ngoing on for the past few months between the Indonesian
\nEnvironmental Forum and the copper mining company Freeport
\nIndonesia could be mentioned.<\/p>\n
Aside from those arguments, the warnings by the President and
\nthe Prosecutor's Office of East Java are timely: the damage done
\nto the environment has now reached a critical stage and should be
\ntackled seriously.<\/p>\n
