        "content": "<p>Other ways to spend vacation days<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): How do students fill their month-long school<br>\nholidays?<\/p>\n<p>\"Not everybody can join the Pesantren Kilat (Islamic short<br>\ncourse) at my school. Only some of us can participate,\" said a<br>\nstudent in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Government and community groups have long devised programs for<br>\nstudents on holiday. The state-owned PT Pos Indonesia postal<br>\ncompany, for instance, hires students to do simple tasks such as<br>\nsorting mail. A few years ago, students even filled their long<br>\ndays by going around the city painting over graffiti in public<br>\nplaces.<\/p>\n<p>Students of more affluent families may spend their holidays<br>\ntraveling. Mira, a second year student at a private senior high<br>\nschool, said she planned to attend an English course in Sydney,<br>\nAustralia.<\/p>\n<p>The program will last two weeks. The students will stay with<br>\nlocal English speaking families to improve their conversation<br>\nskills.<\/p>\n<p>The lessons will also be complemented by sightseeing trips.<\/p>\n<p>Mira argued that this program would be more beneficial for her<br>\nthan local programs: \"I took an English course here, but we<br>\ndidn't get to practice with a native speaker from England, or<br>\nwith people who use English everyday.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"It was quite unsatisfactory because we had to practice among<br>\nourselves. I found our pronunciation awkward and our<br>\nconversations clumsy,\" she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Another student, Lidya, is working part-time as a stall<br>\nattendant at the Jakarta Fair during her vacation. She earns Rp<br>\n50,000 a day. She thinks that everybody should be free to decide<br>\nhow to spend the holidays, whether this means joining Pesantren<br>\nKilat, just plain having fun or working part time.<\/p>\n<p>Lidya wanted to join the religious course, but was unable<br>\nbecause she failed to register on time.<\/p>\n<p>\"Working is not so bad,\" she said. \"Now I can afford to buy<br>\nthings.
