'Other regions have yet to enjoy electricity'

State power company PLN is asking residents of Java and Bali to
conserve energy from May 23 to June 6 as it struggles to complete
construction work on several power plants. The Jakarta Post asked
residents for their thoughts on this energy-saving campaign.

Singgih, 22, is a student at Paramadina University in South
Jakarta. He lives with his parents in Ciledug, South Jakarta.

I am majoring in IT so I spend most of my time in front of the
computer. I think that electricity is a crucial part of our lives
these days. Even though I am sure I could live without it, I am
also sure I would not be able to get anything done without it.

I do not really worry about saving energy like I know I
should. I am comfortable in the dark though, even if I tend to
spend a lot of my time in front of the computer.

I usually try to go out every chance I get because when I am
home I use up a lot of energy. I also only use neon lightbulbs
and try to use the jet pump as little as possible.

I realize the importance of electricity and try my best not to
take it for granted.

Lagaligo, 22, is a student at Padjadjaran University in
Bandung, West Java. He lives with his brother in Bandung.

I think there are a lot of advantages to be had by conserving
energy. Electricity is becoming more expensive. I am still in
university, so by cutting back I can use the extra money to cover
other needs.

I know there are a lot of people who can afford to use as much
electricity as they want, but we should not forget that there are
still regions in the country where people have yet to enjoy the
luxury of electricity. We should be grateful.

I sometimes forget to turn things off, so I use timers on
things that can turn themselves off. Another thing that somebody
told me is to not just turn off the television, but to unplug it
as well.

You should also check your electricity meter. You never know
what could happen these days. The state power company should also
improve its services. Why are there still blackouts that occur
without explanation?

--The Jakarta Post
",
