Organda may scrap bus rental system<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Land Transport Owners Association, Organda,
\nhas vowed to improve its services to the public by applying a new
\nsystem to pay its bus drivers.<\/p>\n
Head of the Organda Jakarta branch, Aip Sjarifuddin, said
\nyesterday that the rental system currently applied has proven to
\nbe the cause of drivers' recklessness, which has provoked public
\noutrage.<\/p>\n
An appropriate method to pay its drivers would be the target
\nsystem, he said.<\/p>\n
In the present system, bus owners charge drivers a daily
\nrental of between Rp 75,000 (US$33) and Rp 80,000. The drivers
\nmust pay their conductors from their earnings and buy their own
\ngas and meals, on top of providing for their families. \"This
\ncauses drivers to compete with each other on the roads, ignoring
\npublic safety and traffic regulations,\" Aip said.<\/p>\n
\"Buses commonly carry as many passengers as they can, or they
\ndrop off passengers before the final destination,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Through the target system, drivers would get a monthly salary
\nand earn extra if they meet the target, and incentive money if
\nthey exceed the target.<\/p>\n
The system is commonly applied in taxi companies.<\/p>\n
Small-capacity buses in the city are notorious for their poor
\nservices and their disregard of traffic regulations.<\/p>\n
Last year an overloaded Metro Mini bus plunged into a river in
\nNorth Jakarta, killing 29 passengers.<\/p>\n
Another factor which causes drivers' recklessness is the low
\nbus fares; Rp 300 for the public and Rp 100 for students.<\/p>\n
Aip said that the drivers' recklessness and disrespect on the
\nroad is understandable when their small earnings, due to the low
\nfares, are taken into account. Bus drivers race with each other
\nto pick up passengers.<\/p>\n
The organization has proposed that fares for small buses be
\nincreased to Rp 750 per person.<\/p>\n
Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto rejected the
\nproposal.<\/p>\n
However, the head of Jakarta's office of the Ministry of
\nTransportation, Abdul Karim Tjokroprawiro, said yesterday that
\ntransport fares may be increased next year.<\/p>\n
He said the House of Representatives will discuss the matter
\nwith the ministry next month. (yns)<\/p>",
