'Orchard Road' shopping belt for Kuningan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Property giant Ciputra Group is one developer
\nwith plans to build on what will be Jakarta's first row of
\nshopping centers in South Jakarta's Kuningan area, a company
\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Ciputra Development president director Harun Hajadi, said
\nrecently the shopping belt was inspired by Singapore's Orchard
\nRoad.<\/p>\n
The project will be developed by PT Citraland Adigraha, a
\njoint venture of PT Ciputra Development and Peninsular Holdings
\nB.V., Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
The huge project, called Mal Ciputra I, will start on Nov. 20,
\nHarun said.<\/p>\n
With a sidewalk up to 20 meters wide along Jl. Prof. Dr.
\nSatrio in Kuningan, the design is also inspired by Orchard Road,
\nHarun said.<\/p>\n
Kuningan is part of the well known Jakarta Golden Triangle,
\nwhich consists of areas along Jl. Jend. Sudirman, Jl. Gatot
\nSubroto and Jl. Rasuna Said, Kuningan.<\/p>\n
Like Singapore's famed shopping strip frequented by
\nIndonesians, the road in Kuningan will also boast an
\nuninterrupted line of shopping centers.<\/p>\n
The wide pavement is the design's unique feature, luxurious
\nfor a city where pedestrians compete for pavement space with
\nhawkers and motorcyclists.<\/p>\n
The project will consist of a shopping center of at least
\n100,000 square meters and two hotels.<\/p>\n
A five-star hotel will be operated by the Hong Kong-based
\nPeninsular Group; and a four-star hotel run by Ciputra Hotels,
\naffiliated to the Swiss Bell international hotel chain.<\/p>\n
Harun said earlier shopping facilities would be set up in
\nfront of the Group's Citra Regency apartments which are already
\non the road, in line with the shopping belt concept.<\/p>\n
US$400 million<\/p>\n
The Group's representatives are still tight-lipped about other
\ndetails. However, according to an Australian publication on 50
\nkey Indonesian projects, Mal Ciputra is estimated to cost US$400
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
Land appropriation has been completed and construction has
\njust begun. The shopping mall should be completed in late 1998.<\/p>\n
Los Angeles-based RTKL International Ltd is one of the
\narchitects, according to the Burwood Publishing Pty. Ltd report.<\/p>\n
Engineering consultants include PT Wiratman and Associates and
\nthe New York-based Thornton-Tomasetti Engineering.<\/p>\n
The shopping belt is part of the Kuningan area's continuing
\nrenewal, a program the municipality is supervising.<\/p>\n
Also being prepared is the diplomatic center in Mega Kuningan,
\non Jl. Prof. Dr. Satrio.<\/p>\n
The moving of hundreds of garment and batik home industries
\nfrom Kuningan to Bekasi, which is largely completed, was part of
