'Orange team' to replace rude busway guards<\/p>\n

As complaints over indisciplined security officers on Jakarta's
\nsole busway continue to increase, busway operator BP TransJakarta
\nsays it will replace the current officers with \"more friendly,
\ntrained officers\".<\/p>\n
\"Starting June 1, we will deploy around 200 new security
\nofficers aboard our buses. They have been specially trained to
\nserve passengers quickly and efficiently in a more friendly way,\"
\nTransJakarta head Irzal Z Djamal said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Twenty of them were women, he added, which complemented the
\nmanagement's earlier decision to employ women as bus drivers.<\/p>\n
The new officers, who will sport orange uniforms, are now
\nreceiving public service, physical and traffic regulation
\ntraining in Lido, Sukabumi, West Java, and at TransJakarta's
\nheadquarters in Pinang Ranti, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Irzal said that the new officers would replace the current 250
\nofficers from the Jakarta Public Order Agency deployed by the
\ncity administration to stand guard on board the buses.<\/p>\n
\"We have received complaints over indisciplined security
\nofficers, including some who were found smoking in the busway
\nstops,\" he admitted.<\/p>\n
According to Irzal, Jakarta Public Order Agency officers would
\ncontinue to provide security at busway stops and bridges.<\/p>\n
He added that the operator was also looking into the
\npossibility of operating articulated buses in order to boost
\ncapacity in response to the appraisal made by a New York-based
\nnon-governmental organization, the Institute for Transportation
\nand Development Policy (ITDP).<\/p>\n
\"We tested an articulated bus belonging to state-run bus
\ncompany DAMRI on the Blok M-Kota busway corridor and found it
\nfeasible ... the bus could take the corners smoothly even at the
\nnarrow turning point in Kota,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Articulated buses would be able to accommodate up to 200
\npassengers per bus, compared to the current 80 passengers per
\nbus.<\/p>\n
ITDP, which also provides technical assistance to the
\nTransMilenio busway project in Bogota, Columbia, on which Jakarta
\nbased its busway project, recommended the use of articulated
\nbuses to increase the capacity of the busway to 9,600 passengers
\nper hour per direction, compared to the current 2,700 passengers
\nper hour per direction.<\/p>\n
The ITDP has also recommended that the administration install
\nadditional doors in the buses and shelters to facilitate
\nalighting and disembarking passengers, and thereby shorten
\nstopping times.<\/p>\n
According to the ITDP, the installation of additional doors in
\nthe buses and shelters would significantly shorten the current
\nstopping time of 45 seconds to only 22 seconds.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor Fauzi Bowo said that the administration would
\nseriously consider the advice it received from the ITDP and
\npromised technical adjustments to planned new busway projects.<\/p>\n
The administration is currently constructing new busway routes
\nconnecting Pulogadung in East Jakarta to Harmoni in Central
\nJakarta, and Harmoni to Kalideres in West Jakarta. The new routes
\nare due to come into operation in December.<\/p>",
