        "content": "<p>Opposition apologizes for pig cartoon<\/p>\n<p>MALAYSIA: Threatened with a government investigation, the<br>\nfundamentalist Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party has publicly apologized<br>\nfor publishing an editorial cartoon likening Prime Minister<br>\nMahathir Mohamad to a pig.<\/p>\n<p>The cartoon, a split-panel that compared a pig to a caricature<br>\nof Mahathir, enraged the prime minister's ruling United Malays<br>\nNational Organization on the eve of his final appearances at a<br>\nparty conference before he retires in Oct. after 22 years in<br>\npower.<\/p>\n<p>Rank-and-file members have called for the opposition Islamic<br>\nparty's twice monthly newspaper, Harakah, to be banned for<br>\npublishing the cartoon. Pigs are considered unclean in Islam. The<br>\ntwo parties compete for votes among Malaysia's majority ethnic<br>\nMalay Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>Harakah editor Zulkifli Sulong issued a two-paragraph<br>\nstatement on late Tuesday saying that the paper was \"retracting a<br>\ncartoon\" and that \"Harakah apologizes to any parties which found<br>\nthe cartoon offensive.\" It was unclear if the apology would be<br>\nenough. --AP<\/p>",
