What will become of Aceh following the government's
\ndeclaration that the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) is a separatist
\nmovement which must be crushed?<\/p>\n
Crushing GAM clearly means launching military operations,
\nwhich also means declaring Aceh to be in a state of military
\nemergency, which will undoubtedly cause wives to lose their
\nhusbands, or husbands to lose their wives, children to lose their
\nparent(s) and parents to lose their children.<\/p>\n
Civilians will lose their homes, stores, cars, etc. Civilians
\nwill, for sure, become victims of war on a daily basis. And there
\nwill be more suffering and victims if the state of emergency is
\nchanged into Military Operations Zone (DOM), like that during
\n1989-1998.<\/p>\n
I personally do not believe that declaring Aceh to be in a
\nstate of military emergency is not aimed at solely crushing GAM.
\nWhy? Because like in many past cases, what decisionmakers said
\nwas not what was executed in the field. Yes, there were
\ndeviations of the central government's policy, in particular
\nduring the DOM period where there were incidents power abuse,
\nviolations of the UN's Declaration of Human Rights, etc.<\/p>\n
Therefore, I would like to appeal to the central government
\nand all parties concerned to prioritize dialogs with GAM and the
\nAceh community at large in solving the Aceh issue, as already
\nrecommended by the House's Special Committee on Aceh.<\/p>\n
