Openness promised in E. Timor talks<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Indonesian Ambassador-at-Large on East Timor Lopes da
\nCruz says he is confident the forthcoming All-Inclusive East
\nTimorese Dialog (AIETD) in Austria will be marked by more
\nopenness as a consequence of the reform movement in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"The spirit of reform offers a great opportunity for more
\nopenness (in the talks). The participants may discuss sensitive
\nissues,\" he said following a meeting with Minister of Defense\/
\nArmed Forces (ABRI) Commander Gen. Wiranto here on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Lopes da Cruz promised to hold an honest discussion with
\ndialog participants about the latest developments in human rights
\nin the province. He said he would explain that various efforts
\nwere being made to improve the quality of life of the East
\nTimorese.<\/p>\n
\"We will explain our efforts in promoting human rights,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Lopes da Cruz said the topics to be discussed in the dialog
\nincluded the establishment of an East Timor cultural center,
\nreciprocal visits of AIETD participants and efforts to develop
\nthe province's human resources.<\/p>\n
He said that during his meeting with the ABRI chief, Gen.
\nWiranto explained the presence of military officers in East
\nTimor.<\/p>\n
\"The ABRI chief's decision to pull out military personnel from
\nthe province was not merely a political maneuver,\" the envoy
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The AIETD is scheduled to be held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3 in
\nAustria. It will be attended by prominent East Timorese figures
\nbased in Indonesia and abroad.<\/p>",
