OpenAI is reportedly developing an AI agent-based smartphone that eliminates the need for traditional apps, allowing users to perform tasks through simple voice commands. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device would integrate AI to handle scheduling, messaging, and other functions seamlessly, potentially revolutionising the smartphone model. Production, in partnership with Luxshare, is not expected until 2028, with specifications likely finalised by late 2026 or early 2027.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - OpenAI is reportedly exploring efforts to develop
an artificial intelligence (AI) agent-based smartphone device.

The technology publication Gizmochina on Thursday (30/4) quoted
claims by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that the “AI agent phone” is designed
without requiring app support as is common in currently marketed
phones.

The built-in AI agent on the phone would be able to execute various
tasks comprehensively based on user instructions.

With this concept, users would no longer need to switch between apps
to complete tasks or needs.

Thus, instead of opening a calendar, checking messages, and switching
from one app to another to plan something, users would only need to
ask.

The AI system would respond by accessing the right information,
suggesting options, and even completing actions if necessary.

Such a method is considered capable of bringing a major shift from
the current app-based phone model.

Similar efforts have been attempted before. Although in a far more
limited way, the Rabbit R1 has tried to reduce reliance on apps.

However, OpenAI’s current efforts are said to be more ambitious,
bringing that idea to a smartphone rather than a companion device.

According to him, production of the device could be carried out in
partnership with Luxshare, which has experience in large-scale
electronics manufacturing.

The device project is said not to be something that will arrive
soon.

He estimates that specifications and the supply chain in the device
development efforts may only be determined by the end of 2026 or early
2027, and mass production of the device could possibly begin in
2028.
",
