Open university, a sin?<\/p>\n

An article in Pikiran Rakyat, April 23, has voiced the concern
\nof the Ministry of National Education over the system of long-
\ndistance education.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry's director of higher education and
\npublic empowerment, Prof. Dr. Fuad Hamid, the long-distance
\nsystem is prohibited in terms of religion, hence it will be a sin
\nif implemented.<\/p>\n
As a student of the Open University (UT), I feel confused
\nbecause UT itself is one of the state higher learning
\ninstitutions recognized by the education ministry, with even a
\npost-graduate program now underway.<\/p>\n
UT applies the Open University Long-Distance Study Program and
\nis found in all major cities.<\/p>\n
In my view, there is no religious prohibition in the search
\nfor knowledge or education, as long as the science studied is
\npositive, beneficial and compatible with religious teachings.<\/p>\n
Therefore, I hope Prof.Dr. Fuad Hamid will clarify his
\nstatement as published in the newspaper, so that the tens of
\nthousands of UT students can be convinced of the legitimacy of
\nthis open university.<\/p>\n
