        "content": "<p>North Halmahera, VIVA \u2013 The North Halmahera Police Resort (Polres\nNorth Halmahera) has named the organiser of an open-trip climb of Mount\nDukono, identified as RS alias Anak Esa, as a suspect in connection with\nthe deaths of three climbers during the eruption of Gunung Api Dukono in\nNorth Maluku. The three victims were two foreign nationals and one\nIndonesian who were trapped when the volcano erupted on Friday, 8 May\n2026. The North Halmahera Police Chief, Senior Assistant Commissioner of\nPolice Erlichson Pasaribu, said the designation of RS as a suspect\nfollowed a series of investigations and examinations, including\nrequesting statements from a criminal-law expert. \u2018RS has been\ndesignated as a suspect,\u2019 said AKBP Erlichson Pasaribu, on Thursday, 21\nMay 2026. RS is known to be a provider of open-trip climbs of Mount\nDukono. Police stated that the suspect continued to offer climbing trips\neven though the area around the mountain had been closed by the regional\ngovernment via a circular since 17 April 2026. \u2018Before the climb the\nsuspect RS also knew that the volcano was at level 2. Yet he still\nconducted the climb without coordinating with the monitoring post that\nincludes PVMBG staff (Geology, Volcano Monitoring and Disaster\nMitigation Center),\u2019 he said. As a result, RS is charged under Article\n474(3) of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP) for alleged negligence\ncausing the death of a person, with a maximum penalty of five years\u2019\nimprisonment or a Category V fine of Rp500 million. Earlier reports\nstated that Mount Dukono\u2019s eruption claimed lives in North Halmahera,\nNorth Maluku. The three climbers were reported dead after being trapped\nwhen the volcano erupted on Friday, 8 May 2026. The victims consisted of\ntwo foreign nationals from Singapore and one Indonesian national born in\nJayapura. \u2018Yes, three died, namely two Singaporeans and one local born\nin Jayapura,\u2019 said North Halmahera Police Chief Erlichson Pasaribu when\ncontacted. According to Erlichson, the victims were trapped in the Mount\nDukono area when the eruption occurred.<\/p>",
