        "content": "<p>'Open skies' deal signed<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON (AFP): The United States and Malaysia signed an<br>\n\"open skies\" agreement Saturday, eliminating restrictions on<br>\nairlines from each other's countries, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The economic and consumer benefits demonstrated by the<br>\nsuccess of open skies in Europe, as well as by our liberal<br>\nagreement with Canada, are increasingly convincing other<br>\ncountries to abandon protectionism and move with us toward a<br>\nglobal open market in aviation,\" said U.S. Transportation<br>\nSecretary Rodney Slater.<\/p>\n<p>The accord signed in San Francisco by Slater and Malaysian<br>\nTransport Minister Ling Liong Sik extends liberalization beyond<br>\nthe standard \"open skies\" arrangement by allowing U.S. airlines<br>\nto fly cargo between Malaysia and third countries, according to<br>\nthe Transportation Department.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has 24 open skies agreements, including five others<br>\nin the Pacific Rim with Taiwan, New Zealand, Singapore and<br>\nBrunei. Negotiations are continuing with South Korea.<\/p>",
