Open letter to RI and Australia<\/p>\n
This open letter has the support of many speakers and
\nparticipants in the 17th Indonesia Update held at the Australian
\nNational University from Sept. 24 to Sept. 25, 1999. This annual
\nevent which brings together academics, public servants,
\nbusinesspeople and citizens from Australia and Indonesia, is an
\nimportant forum for analysis, discussion and dialog. We take this
\naction in response to the urgent and worsening crisis between our
\ntwo countries.<\/p>\n
So, we would like to appeal to the governments and peoples of
\nAustralia and Indonesia as follows:<\/p>\n
We Indonesian and Australian colleagues, sharing a commitment
\nto open, democratic societies and to the welfare of all people in
\nour two countries, are gravely concerned at the rapid
\ndeterioration in relations between Australia and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
We call upon our two governments, media and citizens to
\nconduct themselves in a spirit of tolerance and restraint, and in
\nparticular:<\/p>\n
* to maintain open and trustful channels of communication and
\ncooperation;<\/p>\n
* to promote reconciliation and to refrain from threats,
\nsanctions and abusive and hostile acts toward one another;<\/p>\n
* to continue existing projects of development cooperation and
\nexchange;<\/p>\n
* jointly, in cooperation with other neighboring countries and
\nunder the auspices of the United Nations, to implement in good
\nfaith the May 5 New York agreement toward East Timor's
\nindependence.<\/p>\n
Without underestimating the seriousness of current problems,
\nwe urge that a broad and harmonious relationship should remain
\nour long-term goal for a common future as neighbors, to help
\nIndonesians to succeed in their struggle toward an open and
\ndemocratic society, and to serve as a cornerstone of peace and
\nstability in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n
