Open-air movie workers protest<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): More than 20 managers and workers at open-air
\nmovie theaters visited the National Commission on Human Rights
\nyesterday to protest intimidation from police officers and
\nsoldiers.<\/p>\n
Sonny P. Sasono, chairman of the open-air movie managers and
\nworkers union, said they frequently faced not only personal
\nintimidation but also closure unless they paid \"additional
\ncompensation\" for permits to screen movies both in the city and
\nthe suburbs.<\/p>\n
\"We feel insecure doing business. We hope the commission can
\nwarn both the officers and the soldiers,\" Sonny said.<\/p>\n
He said the union had also asked the government to end a
\nmonopoly on film distribution, which is currently controlled by
\ncompanies owned by business tycoon Sudwikatmono.<\/p>\n
The union also urged the Ministry of Information to review its
\nregulation banning open-air screenings until two years after
\nfilms have been screened at movie theaters.<\/p>\n
\"We want the regulation to allow the screening of new films,
\nor at least within half a year after being screened at movie
\ntheaters,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Commission member B.N. Marbun promised to help the union by
\nsending letters to related authorities. (jun)<\/p>",
