In the directive, he ordered that the name of Lake Ontario, one\nof the five Great Lakes forming the border between the United States and\nCanada, be officially changed to \u2018Lake America\u2019. The US government\nprovided a 30-day window for relevant agencies to update the name across\nall official national databases.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a week later, Google immediately complied with the order.\nApple followed shortly after, updating the name on its mapping service.\nUsers in the United States will now see the name \u2018Lake America\u2019 when\naccessing maps on both services. However, users in Canada will continue\nto see the name Lake Ontario, while users outside both countries will\nsee both names simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>Amidst the compliance of the two global tech giants, one name has\nstood firm in refusing to follow suit. MapQuest, a mapping service that\nhas existed for decades, even before Google Maps and Apple Maps, stated\nit will not change the name of Lake Ontario on its services. They have\nchosen to retain the name that has been recognised by the public for\ncenturies.<\/p>\n<p>This refusal has been met with extraordinary enthusiasm from the\npublic. People have flocked away from Apple Maps and Google Maps,\nturning instead to download MapQuest. In a short period, the MapQuest\napplication surged to the number one position on the list of\nmost-downloaded applications in the Apple App Store in the United as,\neven surpassing other popular apps. On the Android Play Store, MapQuest\nrose to the top six.<\/p>\n<p>MapQuest communicated its stance via a social media post. They shared\na screenshot showing their number one position, writing: \u201cThe people\nhave spoken. We stand firm.\u201d The post has been liked and shared millions\nof times.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first controversy regarding geographical names\ntriggered by Trump\u2019s actions. Last year, these same two companies also\ncomplied with Trump\u2019s order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to \u2018Gulf of\nAmerica\u2019. At that time, MapQuest also refused to participate in the name\nchange.<\/p>",
