        "content": "<p>Only five Internet providers licensed<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): More than 20 Internet providers currently<br>\noperate in the country but only five of them have received<br>\nlicenses from the government, a senior official said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary-general of the Ministry of Tourism, Post and<br>\nTelecommunications Jonathan L. Parapak said that any firms<br>\nintending to provide Internet services to the public are required<br>\nto fulfill several conditions.<\/p>\n<p>A private firm is usually awarded a preliminary license to<br>\nprepare the installation of equipment for Internet services,<br>\nwhich the government will evaluate after a six-month period.<\/p>\n<p>Parapak said that the preliminary license can be upgraded into<br>\na permanent license to allow the firm to continue its operations.<\/p>\n<p>\"Or, the government will cancel the preliminary licenses if<br>\nthe providers are considered inadequate,\" Parapak said after<br>\nsigning a deal on the hand-over of shares from PT Promindo Global<br>\nInternet to the Foundation of Indonesian Technology Education.<\/p>\n<p>The government allows only small-scale firms operated by young<br>\nprofessionals to provide Internet services.<\/p>\n<p>\"Conglomerates don't have any chance of entering the Internet<br>\nservice business,\" Parapak said.<\/p>\n<p>Commercial use of the Internet in Indonesia was introduced in<br>\nSeptember 1994. There are currently more than 20 Internet<br>\nproviders in the country. Among those with operational licenses<br>\nare Promindo Global (Proweb), PT Cyberindo Aditama (CBNet), PT<br>\nRajasa Media (Radnet) and PT Pos Indonesia (Wasantaranet).<\/p>\n<p>Promindo's president, Randy P. Panggabean, said that his<br>\ncompany handed over yesterday 5 percent of its shares worth of Rp<br>\n85 million (US$36,387) to the Foundation of Indonesian Technology<br>\nEducation.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation, which is chaired by Parapak, grants various<br>\nscholarships to Indonesian youths to undertake non-degree,<br>\nbachelor, master's and doctoral studies in telecommunications and<br>\ntechnology.
